ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate : AOP Faugères Mas Gabinèle Rarissime rouge 2011Jeb Dunnuck eRobertParker.com #224, Apr.2016.
AOC Faugères Mas Gabinèle Inaccessible rouge 2013 ($125.00) Score 95
Leading of the 2013s, and one of the true superstars in the vintage, the 2013 Faugères Inaccessible is a fabulous mix of 75% Mourvèdre, 18% Syrah and 7% Grenache that spent 16 months in new oak. Its inky purple color is followed by a fabulously pure array of blackberries, spice-box, wild flowers and garrigue. This gives way to a full-bodied, elegant, yet concentrated and hedonistic Faugères that has no hard edges, ripe tannin and a great finish. You can see the cooler nature of the vintage, yet it has terrific ripeness and is a joy to drink. Bravo to the team for this smokin’ effort! Drink: 2016-2028.

AOC Faugères Mas Gabinèle Rarissime rouge 2014 ($55.00) Score 90-92
More closed and backwards, as well as slightly longer-term prospect, the 2014 Faugères Rarissime (90% Syrah and 10% Grenache) hold things closer to its vest and gives up notes of purple fruits, white pepper, menthol and oak. Medium to full-bodied, focused and fresh, it should develop a touch more personality with a few years in bottle.

AOC Faugères Mas Gabinèle Rarissime rouge 2013 ($55.00) Score 91
Another outstanding wine is the Syrah-dominated 2013 Faugères Rarissime that incorporates 25% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre. Aged 16 months in new oak, it reveals a vivid purple color (as do all of these wines from this estate), as well as lots of black raspberry, cassis, sweet oak and spice on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, nicely textured and elegant, yet with density and texture, it will be better with short-term cellaring and keep through 2025.

AOC Faugères Mas Gabinèle rouge 2014 ($27.00) Score 90-92
Moving to the 2014 reds, the base 2014 Faugères looks to be outstanding, with terrific purity in its cassis, plums, peppery herbs and mineral-driven personality. Made from 50% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 20% Carignan and 10% Mourvèdre, aged new and once-used barrels, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, seductive, elegant and layered, with an already hard to resist personality that will let it drink nicely right out of the gate.

IGP Pays d’Hérault Mas Gabinèle Grenache gris, blanc 2014 ($22.00) Score 88
Readers looking to see what Grenache Gris offers should check out the 2014 IGP Pays d’Hérault Grenache Gris from Mas Gabinèle. Made from 100% Grenache Gris, and vinified and aged in a combination of tanks and barrels, it offers that classic minerality and steel/iron characteristic of the variety to go with plenty of citrus, white currants and lime peel. Medium-bodied, lightly colored, refreshing and with a dry, clean finish, it’s perfect tapas wine to drink over the coming 3-4 years.

AOC Faugères Mas Gabinèle Rarissime rouge 2013 91- 93+
Tasted as a barrel sample, the 2013 Faugères Rarissime is similar to the 2012 with its bitter herbs, vanilla, spice and sweet black cherry and black raspberry fruit. Glass staining purple in color, with full-bodied richness, gorgeous purity and a fresh, focused profile that will allow it to age gracefully, it should benefit from short term cellaring and have 10-15 years of longevity.

AOC Faugères Mas Gabinèle Inaccessible rouge 2011 94
Another terrific wine, the 2011 Faugères Inaccessible is made from 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah, 20% Grenache, all of which was aged 16 months in 100% new French oak. It offers lots of black fruits, chocolate, coffee bean and wood smoke to go with a voluptuous, rich, concentrated feel on the palate. This is a big, rich and concentrated effort that need bottle age. As with the Rarissime cuvee, give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following.
